Link's fairy companion in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Navi

Navi is the fairy given to Link in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a companion and guide. Unlike the other children in the Kokiri Forest, Link does not have a fairy of his own and the Great Deku Tree requests she help Link on his journey:

Navi the fairy... Thou must aid Link... And Link...When Navi speaks, use (^) to listen well to her words of wisdom...

She aids link by providing tips on how to defeat opponents, the game's controls, as well as reminding you every single time you decide to play the game again that a wall with vines looks like it might be climbable.

Hey! Listen!

Navi is one of the few characters in the game to be voiced in English, and is noted by many gamers for pointing out objects of interest.

Trivia
  • A quick internet search (somewhat unsurprisingly) reveals many gamers debate whether Navi was a potential love interest for Link, and whether she had feelings for him. This was sparked potentially by a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto.
  • There are also fan theories about just who Link was searching for in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, especially due to the fairy sound effect when the following text leaves the screen: "A journey in search of a beloved and invaluable friend... A friend with whom he parted ways when he finally fulfilled his heroic destiny and took his place among legends..."
  • The same voice actor also provided the voice of Ciela from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Official Zelda Series Timeline Released

Nintendo released a book to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Zelda series titled 'Hyrule Historia'. The book contains artwork, designs, and information. It also contains the hotly debated timeline of the series - except this time it's 100% official. In the early 2000s Nintendo of America released this timeline - complete with a warning that this was only their interpretation and the actual timeline remains open to debate. Translator Dan Owsen wanted to upload a draft but Nintendo Japan requested them to cancel the plan - as despite having an official plan in Japan they want to keep the speculation and theories running for the fandom.

The book is currently available in Japanese only however a fan translation has begun. The above image is a translated version of the official timeline provided in the book.

Going on an adventure by yourself is lonely and dull. Navi may seem “annoying” at times, but it’s hard to imagine Ocarina of Time without communication with Navi, and communication partners like Navi have been employed in different forms in subsequent games in the Zelda series.

I think that how you feel when you have to say goodbye to a partner who you sometimes thought was “annoying” is an important element of the experience of Ocarina of Time.
