Side-scrolling is a gameplay concept wherein the player moves from one side of the playfield to the other in a horizontal fashion for a length of time or distance. This method of gameplay is most evident during the third-generation of videogame consoles, encompassing the lifespans of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, and others, wherein side-scrolling largely replaced flip-screen-style navigation.
Platformers (Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog), beat 'em ups (Double Dragon and Battletoads), and shooters (R-type, Contra) often make use of side-scrolling.
