Publisher Activision Blizzard is expecting its upcoming real-time strategy game StarCraft II to be a significant long-term success for the company -- and developer Blizzard has so much faith in the game that it has reportedly spent more than $100 million on it over the course of its production...
Although not announced until 2007, development of StarCraft II began in 2003; the game went into more dedicated production in 2005, following the release of World of Warcraft.
Blizzard have announced that StarCraft II will be released on July 27 worldwide.1
As noted on wow.com that at 7:30pm, EDT the queue to purchase either the new World of Warcraft pet or mount hit above 140,000. From the screenshot provided the estimated time at 71,338 people waiting was 7 hours, after which you have 15 minutes to purchase the item before getting booted.
These two items are the latest in Blizzard's attempt to allow people to purchase in game items with real world money but ensuring that none of the items available allow any player an actual gaming advantage. Yet people come in droves to purchase pets and now a mount (this is the first mount available).
Shacknews is reporting on Blizzard's announcement of a collector's edition release for the upcoming Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, which is slated to be released sometime between now and this summer. The CE, containing a copy of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty for both PC and Mac, will ship at $99 and come with "a 176-page art book, a 'Thor' unit pet for World of Warcraft and the original StarCraft plus expansion on a USB thumb drive shaped like protagonist Jim Raynor's dog tag".
Sounds like a great way to get gamers into the Starcraft saga if they missed out on the first game, which with its 12 year age ranks up there with the best classics. And the fact that it's on a USB stick should make it easy to port the game around between home and the office. Great!
