You are a mighty Celestrian, fallen from the sky and exiled to roam amongst man and beast in the world below. Where will your travels take you?

The existence of Dragon Quest IX was first confirmed in 2006 by series co-creator and music composer Koichi Sugiyama. What Sugiyama failed to mention, however, was, at the time, one of the biggest surprises in the industry: that the next major installment of the super popular Dragon Quest series would be on Nintendo's handheld DS instead of on a major home console. Since then, the shock has abated and, after much delays to appease legions of Japanese gamers clamoring for orthodox Dragon Questing, the ninth installment to this epic series has been unleashed.

I spent the days doing anything I felt like, researching whatever kind of technology struck me, playing whatever games piqued my interest ... for example, I wound up playing Dragon Quest IX for about 400 hours.

Japan isn't so happy about Dragon Quest IX

A survey of Famitsu readers in this week's issue asks the readers "Do you welcome Dragon Quest IX on Nintendo DS?" -- apparently 46% weren't particularly impressed. Nor were they intrigued by the notion that there's a world of gameplay beyond 1986's turn-based random encounters: 53.9% found the idea to be ludicrous. In fact, it's so bad that when asked what would be hot in 2007, retailers listed Wii above Dragon Quest IX. Holy crap! The world is turned upside-down!1
