Fantasy becomes reality, and unfortunately for us, that's true. Square's venture into the film industry proved a disaster, losing the would-be conglomerate millions in box office revenue (52, reportedly1). However, from the ashes of the poor reviews rose... nothing, really. The shiny new doors at Square Pictures were closed, but only before they were ripped from the hinges and lobbed at Hironobu Sakaguchi, whose long and lustrous career at Square ended with his failures as a film producer. Three planned sequels were understandably canned shortly thereafter. Square's losses were insurmountable only until a 2003 merger with Enix resulted in a swift and gainful recovery.
