Final Fantasy XIII-2

An RPG for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by Square Enix and Tri-Ace1 in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII series

Lightning has vanished from the world and ends up in Valhalla - however her friends assume she has died. Over a year later, her sister Serah Farron meets a young man who claims to have seen Lightning, and she agrees to journey with him to find her.

Taking place over a year after Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a direct sequel with a number of new features. The largest inclusion is the 'Historia Crux System' which allows the player to jump through time gates with drastic changes being reflected in the game depending on the action taken. These actions will lead to different endings. The game will also have multiple dialogue options - however these will not have an impact on the story.

Trivia

In December, 2011, Final Fantasy XIII-2 became the 18th title to receive a perfect review by Famitsu2.

Eurogamer attempts to put into words the strange experience of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Hurling money at a development team that has been labouring without firm creative leadership for close to a decade now has led to a game that is, in many ways, as disjointed as its world, as rambling as its lead character. In those fragments excellence, confusion, beauty, strangeness, wonder and loss may all be found.
Simon Parkin in a Eurogamer Review of Final Fantasy XIII-2, scoring it 8/10.

Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work
a large part of Square Enix's marketing plan for Final Fantasy XIII-2 has revolved around the message "This is not Final Fantasy XIII!" During preview events and demos, the developer has been careful to show off all of the new elements that the first game did not have: towns, NPCs, sidequests, and so forth.

Famitsu rates FFXIII-2 40/40, advises linearity is gone
The setting and presentation is fantastic...and the issues people brought up with the first game -- its linearity, its lack of meaty gameplay -- are a thing of the past. You're sucked into the game right from the beginning, and the story's very easy to get into.
