The Pillar of Autumn flies past a mysterious ring-shaped space centre, contemptuously called "Halo" by the Covenant. Inside, Captain Keyes readies the ship for battle with the enemy, waking the Master Chief, hero of the epic trilogy.

The first of the main Halo series, Halo: Combat Evolved (originally meant to be a real-time strategy) managed to average out half a million copies each year, reaching 2,000,000 copies by 2005, raising the bar for shooters of sixth-gen platforms.
