Metal Gear Solid familiarized the gaming world with the concept of survival over glory. You play as special forces agent Solid Snake, sent to Shadow Moses Island in Alaska's Fox archipelago, which has been taken over by next-generation special forces, including members of your old unit. What follows is a twisted web of lies, deceit, double-crosses, and lots of fantastic explosions.

Trivia
  • Almost all voice actors in this game used an alias on the official credits for this game.1
  • Over six million copies have been sold of Metal Gear Solid worldwide.2
  • TV and magazine ads, in-store merchandise give-aways for purchasers, in-store sampling, direct mail promotions, PlayStation hardware pack-ins and more demo giveaways were all part of a huge promotional campaign which cost the a total of US$8 million.3
Other Versions

A remake titled Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was developed by Silicon Knights under the supervision of Hideo Kojima and released for GameCube in March 2004. While Twin Snakes was largely developed at Silicon Knights, its cutscenes were developed in-house at Konami and directed by Japanese film director Ryuhei Kitamura, reflecting his dynamic signature style, utilizing bullet time photography and choreographed gunplay. While the storyline and settings of the game were unchanged (although a select few lines of dialog were re-written more closely resembling the original Japanese version), a variety of gameplay features from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty were added such as the first-person aiming and hanging from bars on walls. Another change involved the voice acting; Mei Ling, Naomi, and Nastasha.

In 2000, Konami released a non-canonical Metal Gear game for Game Boy Color, Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (titled Metal Gear Solid in North America).

President Obama, who declared 'A World Without Nuclear Weapons' in Prague, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Has the era at last started shifting? The start of the Peace Walker plan? I hope that comes to be. 'Peace will not walk to you'... 'You must both walk towards one another.' From the gym.

To Let the World Be

BlogMetal Gear Solid: Philanthropy is finally out! You can watch it streamed via Vimeo on the main site Here or you can download it via bittorent in the hi-quality .mov or the smaller xvid .avi. You can also download Daniel James' phenomenal soundtrack at Hybrid Two.

Simply put, this is the greatest fan film ever made. Its not perfect, but its far better than the proposed Hollywood MGS movie could ever hope to be. Snake has a few moments where he seems a bit out of character, but overall the look, feel, and, most importantly in my book, the sound is strictly 100% MGS. Well worth a watch, even for those that aren't fans of the series, just as a 'look how crazy awesome these fans are!!'
