The Gindra Liberation Front (GLF) have stolen a new Metal Gear prototype and plan on using it to win the ongoing civil war. Solid Snake, the former FOXHOUND hero is now living in Alaksa, retired. Forcing him back into the fray is former FOXHOUND commander Roy Campbell, who orders him to infiltrate the GLF headquarters - which used to be known as Outer Heaven, the place where Snake became a hero seven years earlier, - and prevent a potential disaster.
Metal Gear Solid was released in Japan as Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel and is an alternative story to that told in Metal Gear Solid, taking place after the events of Metal Gear. The game has an overhead 2D view - however unlike the earlier games the screen scrolls with the player's movement and Snake can move in eight directions. The game is broken up into 13 stages, and upon finishing the player will unlock over 180 VR missions, the ability to replay story missions with new objectives and a 2-player battle mode over the Game Link Cable.
Trivia
- The game was created at Konami Europe's request for a Metal Gear game on the portable Game Boy Color system.1
