Shadow of Memories

An Adventure game for PlayStation 2 by Konami

Main character Eike Kusch walks out of a cafe and is prompty stabbed in the back by an unknown assailant and dies. Shadow of Memories begins with an odd twist; your character is dead before you can actually do anything. An unknown voice rings out advising Eike that he has died, most unfortunate. What is fortunate is Eike now has the chance to change his fate by using a time device to prevent his death.

The game has no action elements and is a purely adventure/mystery title. By moving back and forth through time you can change the environment thus stopping the killer again each time. For example the first trip back in time is only by about an hour; you persuade a few city folk to head to the town square. This prevents the original death as the murderer chooses not to kill Eike because of the amount of witnesses present.

Only by continuing back and forth through time (trying to avoid time paradoxes along the way) and viewing all eight alternative endings can you unravel the mystery behind this story.

The game is titled "Shadow of Destiny" in the United States; "Shadow of Memories" is the Japanese and European title.
