Gunpei Yokoi

A Game and Hardware designer for Nintendo

Gunpei Yokoi

Gunpei Yokoi began work at Nintendo in 1965 as a maintenance engineer/janitor. Despite his entry at the lower corporate echelons, his mechanical skill and innovation were vital for Nintendo when the company entered the videogames industry in the 1980s. Yokoi's achievements and credits span some of Nintendo's most prolific series and hardware: Donkey Kong, Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Tetris Attack, the Game Boy.

Sadly, Gunpei Yokoi was killed in a car accident in 1997, though not before his contributions to entertainment and technology made their mark on countless millions of gamers spanning the globe.
