Koji Kondo

A Music Composer for Nintendo (Nintendo EAD)

Koji Kondo

Having been with Nintendo since the NES era, Koji Kondo has produced music for some of the greatest games in history and is one of gaming's most venerable and prolific composers. His music can be heard throughout the Zelda and Mario series (including his only Square work in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a collaboration with Yoko Shimomura and Nobuo Uematsu).

Fans and critics alike cite his greatest talent being his ability to craft melodies that while catchy and pleasant upon first listen, remain enjoyable even when looped over long periods of time and played through inferior sound equipment. His songs are certainly memorable; the title theme song to Super Mario Bros. retains its iconic status more than 25 years after its initial release.

Kondo is part of the Sound Group of the Nintendo EAD team.1

Listen to this guy transcribe iconic Super Mario Bros. / Super Mario World level music into a beat that his lips & larynx can move to. So good, it's scary.

Song of Time played on a Carrot (of Time?)

Came across this nugget of Youtube gold a couple of years ago, and its mindblowing novelty still hasn't worn out. This quaint take on the iconic Song of Time ocarina theme from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is guaranteed to please. Leave it to the Japanese to turn a homegrown veggie into a legit musical instrument, eh? Check out heita3's profile for more musical madness and other insane garden-variety instruments.

Super Mario Galaxy: Original Sound Track review

Super Mario Galaxy Original Sound Track

GalacticOne of the most dexterous soundtracks to emerge from the Nintendo assembly line in recent memory is none other than this rich, versatile offering from veteran Koji Kondo and relative newcomer Mahito Yokota. The sweeping display of orchestrated opulence is reminiscent of past Mario titles complimented with a sometimes organic feel (reminiscent of Pikmin) with hints of John Williams' works on Star Wars (for much of the "imperial" motifs used for Bowser and his space legion), among several cosmic influences. It fits Super Mario Galaxy's mold perfectly, and does nothing less than enhance an already nearly-pristine gaming experience.
