Someone has written an analysis of Final Fantasy VIII based around the idea that Squall dies at the end of disc one and the rest of the game is his imagination in his dying moments. From the analysis:

This article discusses the possibility of Final Fantasy VIII's storyline covertly revolving around the death of its main character early on, a theory which - so far - appears to be undiscussed on the internets. We will attempt to explain the basis of the theory, and argue why it may be true. At the end of the article we concede that there is no real "proof", merely suggestions and hints. However, we hope this analysis will add meaning to the game for all players - perhaps refreshing its value over a decade since the game's release - and inspire a discussion as it did between us.

The article includes screenshots from CG scenes in the game and Youtube videos that are used to back up the theory. The entire analysis is also available under a Creative Commons license.

This article intrigues me greatly. It never made sense to me that Squall survived the impaling. And the ending all ways perplexed me. My friend hated it because he felt the ending packed everything up so sweetly with deus ex machina. But even if I approach the ending from that perspective, it still doesn't make sense.

This idea that most of the game was all a dying man's dream deserves some more research. I've been wanting to replay the game for a bit now (basically since Jeremy Parish started frequently posting about it on www.toastyfrog.com). I've all ways enjoyed the game, but couldn't really figure out why. Given the opinion of the vast majority of the internet, it is because I was an immature teenager when I played it and thus had poor taste in fantasy and storytelling. I've never bought into that, but never spent the time to come up with a counter argument.

I will definitely keep the theory in mind when I make another playthrough in the coming months.

As for whether it is what the developers intended, you shouldn't concern yourself with that. It's all ways interesting to find out what the author wants you to read when you read their works, but ultimately it is the reader that decides what any story is truly about. Even if this means its genius is an accident.

On a related note. Who is duckroll? I know I've heard of him/her before but can't put my finger on where.

Call me silly, but I seem to remember Rahul himself writing that article a couple/few/whatever years back with his girlfriend.

EDIT: Yeah, its the same one. Good job again, Rahul, I read that before I played FFVIII initially, and I enjoyed the game a lot more as a result of it.

Although come to think of it, I still don't think I ever finished it. I seem to recall losing interest around disc 3 somewhere...

Good to hear! Although it's all the more mindblowing if you play it the regular way first and then realise all this. Otherwise it's sort of a spoiler, I guess.

Yea I read his Xenogears article not too long ago. He's insanely quick with gaming news as well, I don't know how he does it.

He's in Singapore and speaks Japanese, so I think he monitors the Japanese community and just picks stuff up when it hits there.

Nice read, it seems like this idea was really thought out. It certainly makes the game that much more interesting. But you know what? I think your analyzing the story too much, I like to take the story as it is - retarded... and badly written and thought out. That and the 'developers being high at the time' theory. Seriously check it out:

Great reads definitely. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some serious 'LOL' moments while reading. One persons point of view of every main Final Fantasy game to date.
