Iwata: Dev Costs For High-End 3DS Games May Approach Wii Costs

The newly-introduced Nintendo 3DS handheld has markedly better graphical performance than its DS predecessor, and squeezing all the power out of the device means higher development costs when compared to DS, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said in an E3 Q&A.

It's almost a portable Wii though isn't it? It definitely shows enough potential to be one. This device is quite important to me, particularly for 2 reasons:

1. This device is proving to me that the Wii isn't as attractive as it once was with it's software library.

2. Kid Icarus: Uprising

Another thing to take note of, the 3DS has already accumulated the best third party support that Nintendo's ever seen. It trumps the Wii's launch line up already and it's still half a year off from release. I wonder how Nintendo is going to tackle the Wii2 with third party support, can they even persuade them enough with what ever innovation it will have to get as much support as the 3DS? That's a pretty big conundrum if I've ever seen one.

@Matt Ah right. Well even so, the production cost won't hurt public interest so long as they have a strong launch library (which is looking like they definitely do).

I'm fine with this. I'm not opposed to large development costs until they start reaching Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 levels. Wii games are reasonably priced so if a portable game was the same I wouldn't mind that either. I keep saying I want a Nintendo DS, maybe I should just keep holding out for one of these, but be sure to buy up the DS games I want in the mean time (when they're cheap).

@Nels Yea I think that would be the best way to go. The DS's life cycle is ending pretty damn soon (what with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn left to look forward to). Seeing as it's DS backward compatible as well, it would seem like a waste of money to get one now.
