Nobuaki Komoto, the director of Final Fantasy XIV has advised that there will be limits on the amount of time you can gain experience each week.
The system essentially is based around 'experience fatigue' as follows:
- Within the first eight hours of play you earn experience as normal
- The seven hours past this time will gradually reduce the amount of experience you earn
- After fifteen hours of gameplay are up, no experience can be earned
- When you are not levelling you recover your 'fatigue' slowly
- As each week passes the experience system will reset back to 100% earning irrelevant of fatigue status
Komoto compares this to real life where no one can train forever non-stop and advises the aim is to allow players with less time available to not lose out to those with more time. However he is also quick to point out that this is still being balanced based on player feedback as the open beta begins shortly.
Final Fantasy XIV is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) in development by Square Enix. It will be released on PC on September 22 in the United States, Japan and Europe. The game will later be released on the PlayStation 3 next year.
