BlogThe more I think about it, the more it bothers. That is, the more people say "graphics don't matter" the more I think they're full of it. Actually, the more I think about it, I find the graphics are incredibly important to me. But maybe I'm being too loose with my definitions. Because whenever I think, "graphics," I automatically lump in art direction. Talking about how good the graphics are is pointless if what is being animated is boring to begin with.
I think I really started to care about graphics back in the Super NES days. Square was pumping out some of the best games graphically the Super NES had to offer. For US release the 1, 2, 3 punch of Secret of Mana, then Final Fantasy VI, and rounding out with Chrono Trigger was just jaw dropping. All of these excellent titles, but the artistic styles and how well the were depicted graphically put these games over the top. And I think that's the first rule I have come away with:
- Good graphics make good games better.
So maybe that isn't news to many of you. In fact, given my interest in site is related heavily to how like-minded I find the other members, I'm probably preaching to the choir. I'll continue nonetheless. Two of my favorite PlayStation games are SaGa Frontier 2 and Legend of Mana. I think they're both great. But let's be honest, each of them is bogged down with all sorts issues. I'm not going to go into that here for brevity, but if you've played either I'm sure you'd agree. A major component of my positive opinion about them both is that, again, the art direction is fascinating and it's pulled off with gusto in the graphics department. Without a doubt, these games would be much lesser games had their graphics not been so good. Which brings us to rule number two.
- Good graphics make good games better.
- Good graphics make mediocre games better.
If you're savvy, you may see where this is going. I list a few more games that are for all intensive purposes bad games and I show that they're good graphics uplift them from their chains of imprisonment into something palatable to a more general audience. Unfortunately, I can't do it. I think it's possible, but I do not have the experience to put forth that argument. So while I'd like to make the argument flat argument that, "Good graphics make games better," I'm stuck with:
- Good graphics make non-bad games better.
Again I want to reiterate that good art direction is needed first. Without that, or games where art direction doesn't matter (I'd actually argue that those instances do not exist, but I'm leaving it in for naysayers), quality graphics is a key part to producing quality products. So the next time you hear someone start telling you that big lie so many games like to tell, "The graphics don't matter," tell them to get off their high horse and get over themselves.
