Mario series

The Mario franchise is a media franchise consisting of video games published and produced by Nintendo. The games have been developed by a variety of developers including Nintendo, Hudson Soft, and AlphaDream. Most Mario games have either been released for the arcade or Nintendo video game consoles and handhelds dating from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the current generation of video game consoles.

The main series in the franchise is the Super Mario series of platform games, which mostly follows the adventures of Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom. These games typically rely on Mario's jumping ability to allow him to progress through levels. Mario has been featured in 200 games of various genres, and the Mario franchise is the best-selling video game franchise of all time. At least 31 different Mario games have sold more than a million copies each since 1995. This includes the core Super Mario series, which alone has sold over 262 million units worldwide, as well as the Mario Kart series which sold 78 million units, the Mario Party series which sold over 32 million units, Donkey Kong which sold over 125,000 arcade machines and six million Coleco cartridges, and Mario Bros. which sold 1.72 million Famicom cartridges.

Tropes vs Women: Damsel in Distress

Tropes vs. Women, a video series that looks at recurring stereotypes of female characters in video games, has released its first video in the series after being funded on Kickstarter last summer (the project received $158,922 of its requested $6,000 goal). As a trope the Damsel in Distress is a plot device in which a female character is placed in a perilous situation from which she cannot escape on her own and must then be rescued by a male character, usually providing a core incentive or motivation for the protagonist’s quest.

There are at least two timelines on the Internet that put the major Super Mario games in chronological order, as if they happened to one guy named Mario who has been living an extraordinary life.

These timeline don't present Mario as a real man. The people who make these timelines aren't that free-thinking. But the makers of Mario timelines have asked questions that most people have lived their lives without asking, questions like: Does Super Mario Bros. 3 really take place after Super Mario Bros. 2?

Super Mario 3DS hints from Miyamoto

Speaking to Edge Magazine today, Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto gave a few details on the upcoming Super Mario 3DS, including the release, which he claimed will be this year.

"It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64," said Miyamoto. "It won't convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I'm talking about... For example, the floors floating in space: in 2D it's difficult to judge the distance, but in 3D it's really easy."

Added Miyamoto, "The tail... on the logo – it's what you think it is. You probably know what's going to happen using that character."
