Fingers pointing to violent videogames once again after Newtown, Conn. massacre

It was a pseudo-commando attack, as if the killer were playing a video game and racking up points for every victim. Once again, the crime appeared to be staged for maximum shock value. And once again — just as in Aurora, Colo., this past summer — there was the element of overkill, with multiple weapons, a military-style rifle and massive amounts of ammunition.

A Washington Post article today connects the grisly acts of a troubled youth to ultraviolent videogames, highlighting continuing opprobrium of the industry, including one quote from a "forensic psychiatrist":

I point the finger unreservedly at the entertainment industry, which has spawned and cultivated gaming that by design is increasingly real, geared to action as the shooter’s point of view, increasingly dehumanizes victims, and increasingly rewards players by how many they kill.

The article concludes that Adam Lanza, the now infamous murderer of twenty schoolchildren and several of their teachers, may have suffered from a mental disorder like schizophrenia, which "appears to increase the risk of violence."

However, this mass murder, along with the one in July in an Aurora, CO movie theater, come along the heels of an E3 that showcased some of the most ghastly, gratuitous, and conspicuous violence ever seen in videogames. A separate Washington Post article notes that even as mass murders continue (and videogames become disturbingly more violent), fewer and fewer Americans are concerned that the escalating violence is a result of a broad cultural problem.

Ni No Kuni...epitomizes the old-school console RPG; in fact, it feels more like a classic Dragon Quest game than recent Dragon Quest sequels do...Imagine if DQVIII's sequel had appeared on an HD system rather than on the tiny DS, that Akira Toriyama's artwork had been swapped out for image design by Studio Ghibli, and that the combat system added a real-time element and played up the monster-collecting mechanics of Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VII...To top off the Dragon Quest vibe, Ni No Kuni's English localization has been spearheaded by Richard Honeywood, the former head of Squaresoft localization who defined the Dragon Quest dialogue style with his work on DQVIII. Ni No Kuni reads and sounds exactly like it was ripped from the DQ world; characters speak with a variety of European dialects (including a persnickety Welsh monster companion) and puns abound. A feline fortune teller is called a "Purrognosticator"; a pig soldier is called a "Boarrior"; and the mechanical pig boss you battle at the demo's end is called "Porco Grosso." That... is Ni No Kuni. And it's endlessly charming.

Some of the most thought-provoking and original games on the E3 show floor were tucked away in a nearly hidden corner of the PlayStation booth.

Through its Pub Fund initiative, Sony is reaching out to indie game creators and giving them the development support they need to make their bold new ideas into more fleshed-out, commercially viable games. This in turn helps grow the PlayStation 3′s catalog of unique exclusive games. Coming out of E3, we were quite impressed with titles like The Unfinished Swan, Papo & Yo and Dyad.

Star Wars 1313 shows another tantalizing glimpse at what next gen gaming will offer

In addition to Square Enix's Agni's Philosophy demo shown at this year's E3, LucasArts showed off an impressive selection of clips from Star Wars 1313, an action-shooter that, although shrouded in mystery, shows real-time gameplay using photo-realistic graphics. LucasArts' offering differed from that of Square Enix in that Star Wars 1313 is a real game in development, and the demo video shows supposedly real gameplay. According to this post at Giant Bomb, LucasArts has not yet revealed the platforms 1313 will run on, though the tech used was clearly running on the best PC hardware you can get right now, which should be significantly better than the hardware running on the six-plus year-old PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles...
