Nintendo Power

Nintendo Power

Nintendo Power was an official monthly news and strategy magazine covering Nintendo consoles and games. Nintendo published it until issue #222 (December 2007), when Nintendo contracted publishing duties to Future US, the U.S. subsidiary of British publisher Future.

The first issue

The first issue published was July/August 1988 spotlighting the NES game Super Mario Bros. 2. In August, 2012, it was announced that the magazine would end it's 24-year publication run with its December 2012 issue which featured a New Super Mario Bros. U cover that was a homage to the first issue. It was one of the longest-running video game magazines in the United States and Canada.

Nintendo Power Magazine Commmercial

In memoriam of Nintendo Power, which will be concluding its 24 years of publishing at the end of the year. The end of Nintendo Power reflects how the videogame industry has changed so radically over its publication lifetime, from the point when information, tips, and buying suggestions spread through the schoolyards, offices, and neighborhood street corners of America -- a time before the internet made gaming information ubiquitous. Enjoy this commercial, produced in the heydays of Nintendo Power.

More

If you cut your teeth on the Nintendo Entertainment System (not literally, I hope), the name "Howard Phillips" should sound familiar; he stood as the smiling American face of Nintendo's corporate monolith for a solid decade, and did everything from running the company's warehouse to editing Nintendo Power, in which he appeared as himself in comic form for several years.
