As if it wasn't obvious when the game was first announced, Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis has become the top selling cellphone game ever with 200,000 users registered on the first day alone.
Square-Enix disclosed some problems that have arisen with the beta testing of Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Namely, people can't stop playing it, to the point that the servers are frequently overloaded. According to Square-Enix, there have been over 1.6 million accesses since August 31st. At most, there are around 16,000 users in an hour.1
Square-Enix wants your Egg Monster designs. To enter, all you have to do is send a drawing of your Egg Monster and describe it's skills and other information by September 17th. Details on the prize are currently unknown.1
Square unveiled further cellphone plans which included no further details on FFVII: Before Crisis, but they did announce plans to keep you in touch with your pals in Final Fantasy XI's world of Vana'diel, such as chatting and other features that are currently undergoing development.1
Kensuke Tanaka (general producer of the anime Final Fantasy Unlimited, and also involved with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy XI) was revealed as Mist Walker's new Vice President. Sakaguchi announced that Mist Walker was founded over three years ago, and also said that they will soon be making a major announcement. Well, that was kinda underwhelming.1
Square Enix announced that Full Metal Alchemist: Demon of the Red Elixir Will hit Japan on August 27th. Not to be left out of a possible merchandising opportunity, Hori plans on releasing a special edition memory card to be released at the same time as the game.1
For addicts of Final Fantasy XI, Hori is bringing you an alarm clock that not only tells the real time and date, but also the time and date inside the world of Vana'diel. It will also offer four BGM tracks to set as the alarm. The clock will have a price of 4980 yen ($44.84) and will be available on June 24th in Japan.1
Basshe, a new playable character, was recently unveiled. He is a popular general of Dalmaska who, unlike most of the other generals, worked his way up from being a commoner. It is not yet known if he will be a permanent member of the party or merely a guest.1
The GBA version of Final Fantasy I & II will reach the eager hands of Japanese gamers on July 15th. 10,000 lucky fans will receive a special edition strap, thanks to Club Nintendo. However, a US release has still not been confirmed.1
Today Square annonced the long awaited sequel to the sleeper hit Brave Fencer Musashi, entitled Samurai Legend Musashi. The game will follow its predecessor as a 3D platformer but with more expansive levels, Cel-shaded graphics, and a completely re-designed hero.1
Square Enix pushed back the Japanese release of Final Fantasy XII from Summer of this year to late 2004/early 2005. This is already the second delay, and may also be linked to a plan to release Kingdom Hearts II and Dragon Quest VIII before FFXII. Or they could just be shortening Ashe's skirt.1
Currently at sales of 1.4 million out of 1.5 million units produced, Dragon Quest V has outsold every other Dragon Quest remake. Perhaps now they'll consider a US release.1
Youichi Wada, president of Square Enix, recently commented on the development of FFXII. He talked about how the development team had grown tired of the typical RPG formula of walking around, watching events, and dungeon crawls filled with random battles and item collecting. The development team headed up by Yasumi Matsuno, is trying for a more interactive experience this time around, and plans to use it with other FF titles in the future.
Mr. Wada also remarked on the status of Dragon Quest VIII, stating that it is now playable and unlike the FF series, the Dragon Quest games are going to see less change, focusing more on retaining the traditional feel of the series.1
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, which was supposed to have been released this month, had been set back for an August release, and until now fans have been left in the dark as to why. Now, Square-Enix has confirmed that the US version will be the same as the Directors' Cut, which contains extra playable characters, costumes, a versus mode, and extra dungeons.1
In January, Square-Enix USA registered the title 'Samurai Legend' with the US Patent Office. Currently there is no other information as to what Samurai Legend might be, but it's this reporter's guess that it might have something to do with Samurai.1
On January 20th, Square Enix announced that since it's North American release in the fall, FFX-2 has sold over 1 million copies. Worldwide, over 6.6 million copies have been sold, and this is before it's Europe release. Between the two, both FFX and FFX-2 have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Together they account for 20% of the entire series' sales, making them the most successful titles in the franchise, in terms of sales.1
As of November 13, 2003, Squenix abandoned their registry of the title 'Chrono Break' with the US Patent Office. However, still registered in Japan is the title 'Chrono Brake'. Also notable is the fact that Chrono series creator Masato Kato left Square Enix to pursue a freelance career, and recently worked on MonolithSoft's Baten Kaitos. Whether this means a cancellation of the game itself, it's US release, or merely a delay, it's all uncertain for the time being.1
